Can my attic be converted?

A practical, honest guide to the questions we ask before recommending any route — and the reasons a home survey is always the deciding step.

Reviewed July 2026

Start with the shape of your roof

The single biggest factor in whether an attic can be converted is the roof itself. Cut-timber roofs (with rafters, purlins and struts) usually give the most flexibility. Trussed roofs typically need engineered structural work before any usable floor can be created.

Then look at height

The relevant measurement is not just the floor-to-ridge dimension. It is the usable headroom after a new floor build-up, insulation and stair opening are accounted for. A home survey measures this properly.

Then look at how you'll reach it

The new staircase is often the deciding factor. It needs enough headroom top and bottom, it must meet stair regulations, and it has to fit into the layout of the floor below without breaking the flow of your home.

What are you trying to create?

  • Office, playroom or storage — usually the most flexible route.
  • Bedroom or living space — treated as habitable space with requirements around structure, fire safety and energy.
  • Bedroom with en-suite — possible where plumbing routes and floor space allow.

What we cannot answer online

No online tool can confirm suitability. Even our own Quick Attic Check gives an early indication only. Structure, escape routes, ventilation and insulation all need to be assessed in your specific property.

What this means for your project

Every home is different. Use this guidance to ask the right questions and to shape your brief — but confirm what applies to your specific property with a home survey and appropriate professional input.
